In 2003, California Intercontinental University was incorporated in the State of California and started its initial operations. In 2005, the CIU received California State Approval to grant undergraduate and graduate degrees. In 2009, CIU was accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC). The Accrediting Commission of DEAC is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency and it is also a recognized member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
